Wholesale Prices of Fruits and Vegetables Up in Late February

The wholesale prices of fruits and vegetables increased in Bulgaria during the last days of February, according to weekly data from the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets released on Sunday.

The market index for wholesale food prices rose by 0.53% this past week to 2.297 points, compared to 2.285 points a week earlier. The base index level of 1 point was set in 2005.

Among fruits tracked by the Commission, oranges registered the highest increase of 8.1% to BGN 2.23/kg, followed by lemons, up by 5.8% to BGN 2.39/kg. Apples appreciated by 4.3% to BGN 1.69/kg. Grapefruits rose by 3% to BGN 2.58/kg, tangerines by 2.7% to BGN 2.62/kg, and bananas by 1.1% to BGN 2.75/kg.

Among vegetables, cabbage saw the largest price rise, increasing by 9.1% to BGN 1.46/kg. Onions appreciated by 6.6% to BGN 1.26/kg. Cucumbers went up by 6.9% to BGN 3.51/kg, and tomatoes rose by 4.7% to BGN 3.01/kg.

Potatoes were up by 3.6% to BGN 1.33/kg, carrots by 2% to BGN 1.25/kg, and garlic by 1.3% to BGN 6.28/kg. Lettuce alone depreciated among vegetables, dropping by 3.1% to BGN 1.08 per unit.

White brined cheese from cow's milk rose slightly by 0.1% to BGN 11.42/kg, while yellow kashkaval cheese (Vitosha type) depreciated by 0.4% to BGN 17.96/kg. Yogurt (3% and above fat content) appreciated by 5% to BGN 1.39 for 400 grammes, while fresh milk (3% fat) went down by 0.4% to BGN 2.38 per litre. The price of butter (125 grammes) remained unchanged at BGN 3.11 per pack.

Poultry prices dropped slightly by 0.1% to BGN 6.54/kg. Wholesale prices of eggs (size M) rose by 1.9% to BGN 0.32 each.

Rice depreciated by 0.8% to BGN 3.28/kg, beans went down by 0.4% to BGN 4.36/kg, and lentils dropped by 0.4% to BGN 4.41/kg. Sunflower oil prices increased by 0.2% to BGN 3.27 per litre, while flour (type 500) became 1.9% cheaper at BGN 1.45/kg. Sugar also dropped by 1.6% to BGN 1.79/kg.
