On March 3, the National Museum of Military History in Sofia is showcasing for the first time the gold wreath King Boris III presented at the inauguration of the Monument to Freedom on Mt Sveti Nikola in 1934. Also displayed are photos of its construction and inauguration, the team announced.
The monument commemorates the Battle of Shipka Pass, a series of battles between Bulgarians defending the Shipka Pass and the Ottoman army during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878).
Visitors can revisit history in the newly renovated exhibition spaces dedicated to the Liberation from Ottoman rule. Against the backdrop of the Great Powers' decisions on the Eastern Question, the causes of the war, and the course of military actions, they will feel proud to understand the Bulgarians' key role in securing their own freedom, the Museum team said.
Immersed in the atmosphere of the era, visitors at the Museum will learn about the fate of more than 60,000 people involved in the Russo-Turkish War as part of the Bulgarian Volunteer Corps (Opalchenie), various volunteer detachments, and logistical support, including food and supply provision, translation and intelligence services, courier duties and medical aid, the team further noted.
