Electricity production in Bulgaria decreased by 7.72% from January 1 to August 25, 2024, compared to the like period of 2023, show the latest data on the country's energy balance published on the website of the Electricity System Operator on Tuesday. A total of 24,478,705 MWh of electricity were produced this year, compared to 26,525,591 MWh in 2023.

From January 1 to August 25, 2024, electricity consumption in Bulgaria amounted to 23,565,455 MWh, down by 1.38% from the like period of 2023.

The electricity balance (export-import) went down by 65.25%.

The participation of base plants in the country's energy balance decreased by 16.15% to 17,545,250 MWh in 2023 from 20,924,143 MWh in the January 1-August 25 period of 2024.

The participation of renewable energy sources in the transmission and in the distribution networks went up by 44.02% and 36.1%, respectively, year on year.

The electricity produced by hydroelectric power plants decreased by 1.82% this year, compared to January 1-August 25, 2023.
