In the first two weeks of 2024, Bulgaria produced 1,628,459 MWh of electricity, which is a decrease by 16.52% from the like period of 2023, according to the latest data on the country's energy balance published on the website of the Electricity System Operator on Tuesday.

From January 1 to January 14, 2024, electricity consumption in Bulgaria amounted to 1,736,829 MWh, up by 5.16% from the like period of 2023.

The electricity balance (export-import) went down by 136.23%. For the first two weeks of 2023 the (export-import) balance was positive at 299,124 MWh, compared to a balance of minus 108,370 MWh for the first two weeks of 2024. This means that since the beginning of the year, Bulgaria has imported more electricity than it has exported.

The participation of base plants in the country's energy balance decreased by 21.42% to 1,367,753 MWh year on year.

The participation of renewable energy sources in the transmission and in the distribution networks went up by 39.65% to 83,256 MWh and up by 27.44% to 84,334 MWh, respectively, year on year.

The electricity produced by hydroelectric power plants decreased by 10.24%.
