site.btaVegetable and Food Prices Up on Wholesale Markets in a Week

The prices of vegetables and staple foods rose on Bulgaria's wholesale markets over the past week, according to data from the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets.

The Wholesale Food Price Index, which tracks wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, increased by 0.22% to 2.272 points, compared to 2.267 points in the previous week. The base level of 1.000 was set in 2005.

Among vegetables monitored by the State Commission, the sharpest price increase was recorded for cucumbers, up by 19.35% to BGN 2.43 per kg, followed by courgettes, which gained 14.24% to BGN 1.38 per kg. Cabbage went up 10.64% to BGN 1.04 per kg. Onions rose 11% to BGN 1.11 per kg. Carrots increased by 2.52% to BGN 1.22 per kg, and tomatoes were up 5.18% to BGN 2.80 per kg. Potatoes rose 2.54% to BGN 0.97 per kg, and green peppers were up 4.47% to BGN 1.87 per kg. Among vegetables, only red peppers lost 2.35% to BGN 2.08 per kg.

Among fruits, the sharpest rise was in grapes, up 8.11% to BGN 3.20 per kg. Bananas increased slightly, by 1.01%, to BGN 2.80 per kg. Lemons fell 3.36% to BGN 3.86 per kg, apples were down 2.71% to BGN 2.51 per kg, and watermelons dropped 4.93% to BGN 0.54 per kg.

The price of cow's milk white brine cheese rose 0.86% to BGN 12.23 per kg, while Vitosha yellow kashkaval cheese gained 0.65% to BGN 18.15 per kg. Yoghurt (3% and over fat content) increased 0.43% to BGN 1.40 per 400 g, whereas milk lost 0.44% to BGN 2.27 per litre. Butter (125 g pack) rose 0.83% to BGN 3.15 per pack.

Frozen chicken meat gained 0.34% to BGN 7 per kg. The price of eggs (size M) remained unchanged at BGN 0.38 apiece at wholesale. Flour (grade 500) rose 0.92% to BGN 1.53 per kg. Sugar increased 2.68% to BGN 1.84 per kg, and sunflower oil was up 3.18% to BGN 3.24 per litre. Rice rose 2.41% to BGN 3.32 per kg, and dried beans increased 0.98% to BGN 4.31 per kg, while lentils fell 2.65% to BGN 4.11 per kg.
