The multi-storey car park of Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport will be renovated in a BGN 24.5 million project under a contract signed here on Tuesday between the airport's operator, SOF Connect, and GBS-Infrastructural Construction.

"We are delighted to be partnering with an industry leader like GBS-Infrastructural Construction. The company's knowledge and expertise accumulated in a large number of successful projects give us confidence that in the medium term, Sofia Airport will have a renewed and functional covered car parking," said SOF Connect CEO Jesus Caballero.

"It is an honour for us to work with a contractor like SOF Connect. With the implementation of this project, an even more comfortable and modern space will be provided at Sofia Airport. For all travellers, for us, for the guests of our capital. I guarantee that we will complete the project with high quality and on time," Glavbolgarstroy Holding and GBS-Infrastructure Construction Supervisory Board Chairman Kamen Peshov said for his part.

The renovation of Terminal 2's four-storey car park will begin in 2024 and will take about a year to finish. In the meantime, GBS-Infrastructural Construction is expected to complete the construction of an outdoor parking area with a capacity of over 1,000 lots. Passengers at Sofia Airport will thus be able to park in the outdoor area until the renovation of the car park is completed. Once the two projects are implemented, Terminal 2 will have nearly 1,900 parking lots in aggregate.

Together with the new outdoor parking areas, a curbside control system will be implemented at Terminal 2. The new state-of-the-art barrier system based on licence plate recognition will make sure that every arriving driver intending to drop off or pick up passengers can access the curbside without waiting in line. This project includes not only the installation of barriers but also road widening and the building of a new U-turn, which will redirect traffic approaching neighbourhood facilities located outside the airport.
