The Maritsa 3 thermal power plant in Dimitrovgrad has suspended operation following an inspection, said the Regional Environmental Inspectorate in Haskovo on Thursday.

On October 3, a regular monitoring established considerable uncontrolled emissions from the burner installation due to a smoke ventilator failure. The facility has been instructed to tackle the failure immediately.

On October 4, the steam generator at the thermal power plant was shut down. Levels of sulphur dioxide and fine particulate matter have been within the norm since the beginning of the week.

The real time monitoring of data from the control station show that the average hourly sulphur dioxide safe levels have not been exceeded.

In 2022, Maritsa 3 temporarily suspended operation several times and the matter was referred to the court. Workers held a protest in Sofia over the closure.
