Stefan Valdobrev and The Usual Suspects recorded part of their new song "Roofs without Houses" for their upcoming album "The Acoustics of Bulgaria" at the 17th-century St Archangels Michael and Gabriel Church in Arbanasi on Monday. This marked the eighth location chosen across the country for the music-making process behind their project.

Valdobrev told BTA that Arbanasi is a place he feels very connected to. He mentioned that he has visited the village often but had not previously given much attention to this specific church. Most of the places they visit are ones he wants to bring attention to, he said.

Archaeologist Hitko Vachev introduced Valdobrev to the Church of St Archangels Michael and Gabriel. During one of their visits, Vachev described the acoustic niches constructed in the walls to enhance the harmony of the chants.

The percussion and bass guitar for "Roofs without Houses" were recorded earlier at the Nikopolis ad Istrum archaeological reserve near Nikyup. Vocals, tambura, and the delva percussion instrument were recorded inside the church. Valdobrev noted that this church exemplifies Bulgarian acoustics.

During the recording session, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and Armenpress Director General Narine Nazaryan visited the church, where they met with Valdobrev to explore the potential for a similar project abroad.

Krasimira Stefanova, curator of the St Archangels Michael and Gabriel Church, told BTA that the church was built in the 17th century and is one of three museum churches in Arbanasi. It underwent restoration in the 1970s. The church features extensive biblical artwork and frescoes, with inscriptions in Greek. The building has excellent acoustics and hosts the annual Arbanasi Summer Music Festival.
