The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) is electing a new President on Monday. The General Assembly will choose between two natural scientists: Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva (a chemist) and Academician Hristo Naidenski (a microbiologist).

The term of the current leader, Academician Julian Revalski, expires on December 7. Revalski was elected to his first term as BAS President on December 1, 2016, and re-elected on November 30, 2020.

According to the rules, an eligible candidate for BAS president should be an academician or a corresponding member who has not turned 70 by the time of taking over the post (in this case, December 8, 2024).
