The Association of State Universities in Bulgaria was established at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski on Friday, with Rector Georgi Valchev elected as chair.
Valchev said the association aims to form positions on policies in the field of higher education, as these policies are implemented primarily by the Ministry of Education and Science in cooperation with state universities. Unlike private institutions, he noted, state universities receive public funding. Valchev added that the association is open for other higher education institutions to join in the future.
A statement published on Sofia University's website said the new body will act as an equal partner in shaping, implementing, and monitoring State higher education and research policy, as well as in discussions of legislative and regulatory changes.
The association will function as a coordinating platform for aligning positions and actions among state universities on key issues, including management, funding, accreditation, digitalization, staffing policy, and other strategic areas.
It also aims to bolster academic prestige, institutional reputation and public trust in state higher education institutions as the leading bearers of tradition, quality and authority within Bulgaria’s higher education and research system. Other goals include supporting the internationalisation process, strengthening ties between higher education, research and business, promoting the development and realisation of young academics and researchers, supporting higher education’s digital transformation, and promoting lifelong learning.
Among its founders are major comprehensive universities such as Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv, South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, Konstantin Preslavsky University of Shumen, the Technical University of Sofia, and the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, as well as leading institutions in Ruse (the University of Ruse “Angel Kanchev”), Stara Zagora (Trakia University), and Burgas (Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University), together with the National Sports Academy “Vasil Levski”, the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, the University of Forestry, the Technical University of Gabrovo, and others.
