The 42nd edition of the Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival will open in Varna on Thursday evening with a screening of The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent. The co-production of Croatia, Bulgaria, France and Slovenia with screenwriter and director Nebojsa Slijepcevic received this year's Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the Cannes festival.

Fifteen feature films, 20 short films and five TV series are nominated in 2024 and will compete for the awards of the festival. Among the titles in the competition for Best Feature Film are Citizen Saint by Tinatin Kajrishvili, Windless by Pavel G. Vesnakov, Trap by Nadejda Koseva, and The End of the River by Vasil Barkov.

The Open Horizons programme of the festival will dedicate an event to the 80th anniversary of the actress Tsvetana Maneva, who is also the face of the Golden Rose Festival in 2024. She will be honoured with 1973's film The Last Word by Binka Zhelyazkova.

The topics at this year's discussions of the festival will be focused on Eastern European Cinema at Major Festivals, Anti-fascism in the Cinema - Poland and Bulgaria and Local Talents on the World Market: A Guide.

A new format will be available within the festival in the alternative spaces ReBonkers and the Bookstore, offering a look at the new wave in Bulgarian cinema from the 1990s, reimagined in 2024, with titles such as Pieces of Love, I, the Countess, and Late Full Moon to be presented.

On September 21, the possibilities of the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme will also be presented.

The 42nd edition of the Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival will continue until September 26. BTA is a media partner of the festival.
