Valuable and unique archaeological artefacts, including gold jewellery were discovered during excavations at the site of a Thracian warrior's tomb in the Topolovgrad village of Kapitan Petko Voyvoda, said the Topolovgrad Municipality on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

The finds include a gold necklace, a gold diadem, a gold ring and a knife with gold inlay and semi-precious stones, as well as numerous weapons. Experts say some of the finds are unparalleled among those ever discovered in Bulgaria.

A horse was also found buried next to the human body, indicating that the warrior must have been a horseman from a rich family.

The tomb of the Thracian warrior from the Roman troops, dating from the beginning of the 1st century AD was unearthed by a team of archaeologists led by Daniela Agre from the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The team found the unique artefacts on the second day of the excavations, and according to experts, some of the finds are unparalleled among those ever discovered in Bulgaria. Among them Agre singled out a hunting knife, the handle of which is decorated with precious stones, while hunting dogs are depicted on one of the golden bands of the knife.

After the completion of the salvage excavations, the artefacts will be moved for future storage to the History Museum in Topolovgrad.
