For the first time in the last four years, the number of seventh-graders in Burgas Region has decreased this year, the regional administration said in a press release Thursday citing data from the Regional Department of Education (RDE). They are 300 fewer students this year compared to the previous school year.

A total of 4,002 students are in seventh grade in Burgas Region. A total of 51 schools in the region provide secondary education. Open for admission to 8th grade are 157 classes, of which 101 are professional and 56 profiled.

Burgas Region is not the only region in the country with a decreasing number of students. In Vratsa Region (on the Danube), their number dropped by 4% from last year to 1,443 students, data provided by the RDE in Vratsa show.

In Yambol Region (Southeastern Bulgaria), there has been a downward trend in recent years, Nanka Vasileva from the RDE in Yambol said. This year’s seventh-graders are by over 100 fewer than in 2023, and the number of classes will fall below 40 in 2024, she specified.

Seventh grade is the last in Bulgarian primary schools.
