Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev urged the prosecution service on Tuesday to conduct a detailed investigation into Toplofikacia's management over the past 15 years. Terziev said the people of Sofia deserve the truth and accountability for those responsible.
He also pointed out on social media that it is noteworthy how MRF – New Beginning Leader Delyan Peevski, who was sanctioned for corruption under the Magnitsky Act, has managed to "fix the State with a capital S" (D is the first letter of both the Bulgarian word for State and the given name of Delyan Peevski), and is now attempting to address the issues at Toplofikacia.
Earlier in the day, Peevski said in a statement that the crisis with the heating in Druzhba 2 is yet another one of Terziev's failures.
Terziev noted that such demagogues contribute to crises in both the State and businesses, observing that they are "always distant from the people but close to the resources."
He noted that Toplofikacia was already in poor financial and technical condition before his term as mayor. He added that the company continues to be managed by GERB-UDF, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), and There Is Such a People (TISP), not by him or his administration.
Terziev noted that the debts and reliance on Bulgargaz stem from years of neglect and intentional inaction. He supported a concession to prevent the ongoing exploitation of the company by vested interests at the expense of Sofia residents.
Regarding Peevski’s comments, Terziev responded that it would be better if Peevski kept his distance. He cited the outcomes of Lafka, Bulgartabac, Corporate Commercial Bank (CCB), and other companies linked to Peevski, describing him as a symbol of ruin.
Terziev concluded that Sofia residents require transparency, stability, and a modern energy service, rather than new schemes and empty promises.
On Monday, residents of the Druzhba 2 district protested against a three-month heating and hot water outage by blocking traffic on Tsarigradsko Shose Boulevard.
Terziev announced the formation of a working group with municipal councillors to organize an independent technical, financial, and business audit of Toplofikacia. The mayor noted that thousands of families in Druzhba 2 risk spending nearly three months without heating and hot water during the peak of winter.
