Gas Equipment Explosion Destroys House in Sofia Borough, Two People Are Unaccounted for

An explosion of gas equipment in Sofia's Bankya borough Friday destroyed partially one house and damaged a second one, and two peope are unaccounted for. Interior Minister Daniel Mitov went to the scene of the explosion, said the Interior Ministry.

The explosion was reported to police at 11:26 am. The initial information from police was about about an explosion of an underground gas conduit. Gas distribution operator Overgas Network later specified that the blast was likely caused by faulty gas equipment in one of the houses. The Fire Safety Service said that gas supply to the area was cut off.

The available information is that the destroyed house was inhabited by a disabled older man, said Bankya Mayor Rangel Markov. He said that there is no need to evacuate people from the area.

A woman who was in one of the affected houses and was injured in the blast, was checked up by doctors but refused to be hospitalized, the ambulance service told BTA.

The head of the Fire Safety Service, Nikolay Parvanov, told reporters that the individuals who are unaccounted for after the blast, are a man and a woman.
