The conditions for hiking in the mountains are favourable, but the weather is expected to deteriorate in the later hours, with snowfall anticipated, the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of the Bulgarian Red Cross said here on Friday.

There is scattered cloud cover, with moderate winds on Vitosha and near Mount Botev in the Balkan Mountains.

The ski facilities in winter resorts are operational, the MRS added.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology said the weather in the mountains would remain mostly sunny with scattered medium and high clouds. In the evening, cloud cover will increase, and as temperatures drop, snow is expected in the western Balkan Mountains.

Overnight into Saturday, snowfall is forecast in central areas and the mountains of Western Bulgaria. Moderate to strong westerly winds will shift to northwesterly later in the evening and intensify.

Highs: around 10C at 1,200 m, around 2C at 2,000 m.
