The revenue from environmental taxes in the state budget totalled BGN 8.009 billion, which is an increase by 289% from 2011, show data published by the National Statistical Institute on Friday. The Institute's Environment 2022 publication includes information from environment-related statistical research for the 2017-2022 period.

An upward trend is observed in the revenue from energy taxes, which grew by 292% in ten years to reach BGN 7.546 billion in 2022. At the same time, their share in total revenue remained relatively stable: around 88.4%.
In 2022, the biggest amount of taxes were paid by businesses: BGN 6.727 billion or 84% of the total revenue from environmental taxes. The services sector constituted the biggest share: BGN 4.271 billion or 53.3% of the total revenue, followed by industry with BGN 2.324 billion (29%) and the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector with BGN 132 million (1.6%).
Households paid environmental taxes to the amount of BGN 1.153 million in 2022, which is 14.4% of the total revenue from environmental taxes. Households contributed for 13% of the revenue from energy taxes and 39.3% from transport taxes.
The environmental expenditure (investment and current expenditure) were between BGN 2 billion in 2017 and BGN 2.6 billion in 2021. Current expenditure had a dominant share in the total environmental expenditures: between 76.2% in 2017 and 73.3% in 2021. The predominant part of the total expenditure - 78.5% in the 2017-2021 period - was for the collection, treatment, and disposal of waste and for the treatment of waste water.
