site.bta Over BGN 430,000 Allocated for Research of Misionis Fortress near Targovishte

Over BGN 430,000 will be invested in the research of the late antique and medieval fortress of Misionis near Targovishte. The management of the Regional Historical Museum in Targovishte said that archaeological excavations at the site began on August 1 and will continue for three months.

Excavations will be centered around the Early Byzantine fortress at Misionis. 

Experts from the Regional Historical Museum are part of the excavation team. 

The Late Antiquity and Medieval City of Misionis is one of five sites in the country that received funding from the state this season. The archaeological excavations near Targovishte will receive BGN 400,000 from the state budget. The municipality of Targovishte annually allocates funds to support the excavations, providing BGN 34,000 this year.

In 2023, the archaeological season at the fortress ended with new discoveries of precious metals.
