National Day of the Comoros: Independence Day (1975);

National Day of Malawi: Independence Day (1964).

On this date in Bulgarian history:

1922: The Constitutional Bloc coalition is set up by the Democratic Party, the Radical Party and the United People's Progressive Party with the ambition to oust the government of the Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union. 

1965: The Union of Musicians in Bulgaria holds constituent congress.

1990: Bowing to pressure from public protests, Petar Mladenov resigns as President (Chairman) of the Republic.

2001: 39th National Assembly accepts the resignation of the Ivan Kostov government after general elections held on June 17, 2001, when the Simeon II National Movement of Bulgaria's last monarch Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha wins a landslide. Formed in May 1997, it is the second government of the United Democratic Forces and the first since the start of democratic changes in 1989, to serve out its mandate.

On this date in Bulgarian history:

1877: Russian troops liberate the medieval Bulgarian capital Tarnovo (today's Veliko Tarnovo) during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.

1879: Diplomatic relations established with Russia at diplomatic agency level (severed November 5, 1886, re-established February 2, 1896, upgraded to legation status, May 21, 1909, severed September 22, 1915; established with USSR at legation level, July 23, 1934, severed September 5, 1944, re-established August 14, 1945, upgraded to embassy status, January 6, 1948; established with Russian Federation, October 23, 1991).

1879: Prince Alexander I of Battenberg decrees establishment of national customs service.

1990: Students end sit-in at Sofia University after President Peter Mladenov resigns under public pressure.

1992: The 36th National Assembly lifts the immunity of former Prime Minister and current MP Andrey Lukanov and gives permission for his criminal prosecution.

2003: The Boyana Church is incorporated into the National Museum of History. The Boyana Church first becomes a national museum in 1968 and is added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

2014: Tennis player Grigor Dimitrov is first ranked among world's top 10 (at 9th place).
