The Republic of North Macedonia should implement its commitments in order to progress towards European Union membership, said Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said during a European Council meeting on Friday, the government information service said. The Prime Minister brought the issue to the attention of his European counterparts in Brussels in connection with recent developments in North Macedonia.

Glavchev underscored the serious challenges that are emerging in terms of the European perspective of the EU candidate country. The heads of State and Government reiterated the importance of good neighbourly relations, the need for the EU candidate countries to strictly implement their commitments to the EU and the necessary reforms.

Greek media reported that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis have also raised with the European Union the issue of the violation of the Prespa Agreement by the new leadership of North Macedonia, in particular in its part on the use of the country's constitutional name.

Yesterday Glavchev said he intended to bring to the attention of his EU counterparts the issue of adhering to the agreements reached with the Republic of North Macedonia.

On June 25 in a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that the stated intention of the Republic of North Macedonia not to adhere to its international commitments and signed agreements was unacceptable.  The intention of the new government of North Macedonia to reject the legitimate demand of some of its own citizens for the guarantee of rights and freedoms on an equal footing with all other communities in North Macedonia, including through their inclusion in the constitution is unacceptable. Such an attitude is incompatible with progress on the European path. It leaves serious concerns that in its policy towards Bulgarians and Bulgaria, the current government in Skopje risks being trapped in the dogmas of a bygone era, rejected by all democratic societies.
