site.btaBorder Police Chief: Bulgaria Should Long Have Been Part of Land-Border Schengen
“In professional terms, we are ready for land-border Schengen. We should have long been admitted there,” the Director of the Border Police, Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, said on National Television Tuesday morning.
In his words, after the excellent marks that the European Commission gave to Bulgaria’s readiness last year, the decision that followed was politically motivated because a single Member State, Austria, imposed a veto. “I regard this veto as unjust and discriminatory against our country,” Zlatanov argued.
Regarding the possibility of Bulgaria getting into land-border Schengen until the end of this year, he explained that steady communication is under way with Romania.
He was adamant that Bulgarian society aspires to cross-border travel without border control.
