King Ferdinand I deserves to receive his objective assessment, because the truth is that more than one or two generations of politicians explained themselves at his expense for one national catastrophe or another, former Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev (2012 to 2017), told the media . He attended the memorial ceremony at the Royal Palace of Vrana, where the coffin with the remains of King Ferdinand I was placed.

His remains were transported earlier on Tuesday from Germany to Bulgaria by military aircraft in accordance with the decision adopted by the Council of Ministers.

Plevneliev added that this action was expected and stressed that he was happy to be part of this special ceremony. "We have seen so much manipulation over the years and there are two approaches. One is the one we see today - the European one. In this one we realise that a democratic country respects and shows its respect for its leaders, regardless of their successes and failures. The other approach is the approach shown towards the father of our beloved Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Let us never forget that at the beginning of the communist regime installed by the Soviet Union in Bulgaria, the grave of Tsar Boris III in the Rila Monastery was severely desecrated and the bones were scattered," he explained.

According to Plevneliev, the strongest feature of King Ferdinand I was his courage to oppose the will of the Russian Emperor and the other great powers, and to contribute decisively to Bulgarian reunification.
