The Civil Aviation Administration Directorate General has registered the country’s eighth helipad of the air ambulance service, which is located near the Zheleznitsa tunnel, on the Struma motorway, said the Transport Ministry on Friday.

The helipad allows the rapid evacuation of victims of traffic accidents or other emergencies in the stretch of the tunnel and the entire region. Operator Bulgaria Heli Med Service said that a helicopter from Sofia will reach the pad in 30 minutes.

Previously Bulgaria had three hospital helipads in Sofia and one each in Varna, Panagyurishte, Ruse and Veliko Tarnovo. Struma is Bulgaria’s first motorway equipped with a helipad. The pad has been built within a EU-funded project for the construction of the motorway.
