Residents of Kotel on Sunday celebrated the 203rd birth anniversary of Bulgarian revolutionary Georgi Stoykov Rakovski, known also as Georgi Sava Rakovski, one of the most significant figures of the Bulgarian National Revival, said the municipal press center.
The celebration began with a student march along the city's pedestrian street and continued with an official ceremony at Vazrazhdane Square, where the national flag and the flag of Kotel Municipality were raised. Wreaths and flowers were laid at the bust-monument of Rakovski and on his ossuary in the Pantheon.
Kotel Mayor Kosta Karanashev pointed out that he always asks himself "how in an enslaved country, in a dark age, from a small town like Kotel, a boy acquired such self-awareness that he could determine the path of development of Bulgaria? The answer is only one - education! Good education is what can make a person change the world around them", he said, adding that the students should be proud to be descendants of Rakovski and that their school bears his name.
The anniversary celebration ended with a literary and musical programme.
