BGN 15 million have been provided for medical students specializing in specialties in which there is a shortage of health professionals, the Health Ministry reported on its website on Thursday. The funds are provided under a project within the Human Resources Development Programme 2021-2027, co-funded by the European Union. The project starts in April 2024 and will run until December 31, 2028.

The number of medical students that could be funded under the project, as well as the areas with the greatest shortages of specialists, were determined through an analysis by the National Center of Public Health and Analyses.

Child health specialties will be funded first. These include paediatric gastroenterology, paediatric endocrinology, paediatric cardiology, paediatric clinical haematology and oncology, paediatric neurology, paediatric nephrology and haemodialysis, paediatric pneumology and phthisiology, paediatric psychiatry and paediatric rheumatology. Funding will also be made available for students in paediatric healthcare, infectious disease epidemiology, maxillofacial surgery and forensic psychiatry.
