President Rumen Radev expressed his gratitude for the rescue of the hijacked Malta-flagged, Bulgarian-owned bulk carrier Ruen and its crew by the Indian naval forces in a letter addressed to President of India Droupadi Murmu. The ship was hijacked by Somali pirates with the entire crew, including 7 Bulgarian citizens, the Bulgarian President's Press Secretariat reported here on Sunday.
With their highly professional intervention, the Indian servicepersons proved in action the essential role of India in ensuring the security of commercial shipping in the region, the Bulgarian President said.
Radev stressed that Bulgaria highly appreciates the provided support as a new bright expression of the traditional friendly relations between the two countries and peoples. The Bulgarian President is confident that the development and upgrading of ties between Bulgaria and India will continue in the future with the joint efforts of the two countries, the press release said.
The crew of the hijacked ship was released on Saturday with the help of the Indian Navy, said outgoing Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel, quoted by the Foreign Ministry. All the sailors are in good health and efforts are being made for their timely return to Bulgaria, said the Foreign Ministry.
