The Government has started to work on the construction of a national information system for the prevention and protection from domestic violence, the Council of Ministers press service reported here on Tuesday. The system will be set up in line with an amendment to the Protection from Domestic Violence Act introduced in 2023, which should be in force by August 2024.

The system will contain data on instances of domestic violence, victims and perpetrators, the relationships between them, as well as the type of violence. It will also contain data on the duration of the violence and the harm caused to the victim. This register will also include applications for protection orders, immediate protection orders or requests by a public prosecutor, measures imposed under the law and other relevant legislation.

Some of the challenges ahead of the project include the complex information architecture and levels of access, the high sensitivity of the data and the tight deadlines for the development of the system. The discussion at the Council of Ministers was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Mariya Gabriel, who also chairs the National Council for Prevention and Protection from Domestic Violence, representatives of the Ministries of e-Government, Interior, Justice, Labour and Social Policy, the Council of Ministers Secretary General, as well as representatives of the State Agency for Child Protection and the Social Assistance Agency.
