The Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK), one of the major Turkish trade unions, began two weeks of protests on Tuesday over low wages for many employees in the country, DISK told BTA.

The demonstrations are held under the slogan: "Enough! We cannot earn a living!" and "Income justice, tax justice, justice in the country." They will take place in a number of cities in Turkiye.

The first rally was organized in Istanbul, protests will also be held in Kocaeli and Gaziantep.

DISK Chair Arzu Çerkezoğlu and members of the trade union's Executive Board will attend some of the rallies, including Tuesday's demonstration in Istanbul.

In recent years, the standard of living of a large number of Turkish citizens has declined due to the depreciation of the Turkish national currency and high inflation. Annual inflation in Turkiye reached a ten-year high of 85% in October 2022.
