Nikolay Drenchev will remain in Parliament as an independent MP, he said at a press conference at BTA's National Press Club in Lovech on Monday. Drenchev, Ivo Rouschev and Alexander Arangelov were expelled from the Vazrazhdane parliamentary group on February 9 after four Vazrazhdane representatives on the Sofia Municipal Council nominated by them did not support the group's candidate for Sofia Municipal Council Chairman.

Drenchev added that Rouschev and Arangelov will also remain in Parliament as independent MPs but this information is not officially confirmed.

"My decision to stay in Parliament was mostly influenced by the overwhelming support I received from many people - from mayors of municipalities in the region, from the offices of ministers with whom we have worked on things related to the region, from many members of Vazrazhdane, supporters of the party and from people who did not like Vazrazhdane," the MP said. He argued the fact that he was always moderate and balanced opened up huge opportunities to work for the region "without ideological shackles".

"I have the opportunity to finish what I started for the region because I did a lot of things for the region, and the really big and good things only happen when you work without political opposition," Drenchev stated. He also stressed that he was committed to the cause of Vazrazhdane, to the ideas, to the ideals, to what was proclaimed by the party.

Drenchev also said that his brother Dimo Drenchev, also a Vazrazhdane MP, has no plans to leave the party and the Parliament, but does not exclude the possibility of being forced to do so. Such a development would leave the party group with one less person. "[MRF floor leader Delyan] Peevski could not make the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) a third political force, but [Vazrazhdane leader] Kostadin Kostadinov did," Drenchev pointed out.
