Sofia Police Reports Slight Drop in Crime Rate

The Sofia police reported a slight drop in crime last year, when a total of 17 765 crimes were registered, compared to 18,044 in 2022. This is based on crime statitics for the period January 1 - December 31, 2023, announced during a Friday presentation attended by Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov and Interior Ministry Secretary General Zhivko Kotsev. 

"It is important for us to have a high solvency rate when it comes to crimes against the person," Kotsev said, adding that the auto theft crime solvency rate has improved. Domestic violence remains a problem across the country, he said, noting that measures to prevent drugs, aggression among adolescents and road safety must be stepped up. 

Last year, 5,657 crimes were solved in Sofia out of the total number reported crimes throughout the year, which is 31.84%. The crime solvency rate in 2022 stood at 28.12%.  

There were 12 premeditated murders in Sofia last year, eleven of which have been solved.

A total of 13 crimes against citizens’ political rights were reported across Sofia in 2023, one of which have been solved.

Corruption crimes numbered 21, most of which have been solved. According to the statistics, a total of 388 domestic violence crimes have been reported on Sofia’s territory in 2023, compared to 252 in 2022. There were 956 registered cases of driving under the influence, which is 11 more compared to 2022.
