The Cabinet approved Bulgaria's position for its participation in the informal meeting of the Council of the European Union on general issues, more specifically Cohesion Policy, that will take place in Mons, Belgium, on February 5 and 6, the Government Information Service reported here on Wednesday.

Bulgaria's position is that the policy for economic, social and territorial cohesion should continue to be implemented as the main, common EU policy for long-term investment in balanced and sustainable development of all European regions. This should contribute both to reducing interregional disparities in the light of inherited structural challenges and to preventing new inequalities in the light of the recent crises and the objectives of the green and digital transitions. A key condition for a fair transition, according to Bulgarian, is having even more pronounced and targeted support for underdeveloped regions.

Cohesion policy support in education, infrastructure, innovation and enterprise modernization is important for boosting the Union's global competitiveness, as well as making regions better places to live and work. A priority that is particularly important to Bulgaria is finding a response to negative demographic trends, such as the depopulation of some regions, low employment levels and the so-called brain drain.
