There is a high chance of  avalanches in the mountains on Sunday, the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of the Bulgarian Red Cross informed BTA.

A lot of snow has accumulated on the leeward slopes and the danger of avalanches is significant in the high parts of the mountains, the MRS said.

The weather on Sunday at a higher elevations will be foggy and cloudy and it is not advisable for tourists to trek there, mountain rescuers said, adding that when it is foggy, there is a risk of getting lost.

There is fog in the high parts of Vitosha, Stara Planina and Rila, cluds over Pirin and the Rhodopes, and moderate wind over Stara Planina. Temperatures in the mountains on Sunday will be between -10C and -5C and there is a danger of frostbite, mountain rescuers warned.

A team from the MRS - Bansko traveled to the Belmeken hut in Rila after receiving a report of a fatality, the MRS also said. There is still no information on what led to teh incident.

On Saturday  the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) hads issued a yellow code for strong wind in 13 regiomns of the country. The wind in in Pazardzhik, Southern Bulgaria was the strongest, reaching 32 meters per second, followed by sandanksi (21 m/s), Novo Selo, Lom and Oryahovo (20 m/s), Haskovo (18 m/s), Vratsa, Montana, Knezha, Lovech, Kardjali, Chirpan, Kyustendil (17-18 m/s).

Wind with gusts over 30 meters per second are classified as a hurricane.

NIMH noted that there are no warnings of dangerous phenomena for Sunday. The waeather will be cloudy with snowfall in some areas.
