site.btaHealth Minister: Bulgaria's Child Mortality Rate Decreasing, But Still 2-3% Above EU Average
Bulgaria ranks first in Europe in mortality rate, Health Minister Hristo Hinkov said during the 6th National Congress of the Bulgarian Medical Association, held in Sofia on Saturday. The child mortality rate is decreasing, but is still 2-3% above the EU average, he added.
Hinkov pointed out that in terms of the criteria for evaluating a healthcare system, the Bulgarian one is rated with an average score. According to him, this country has many more hospitals than it needs.
"I am convinced that the regional hospitals are the backbone of health care, despite the fact that private hospitals provide good and quality service," he stressed. On average, the state's shareholding in all regional hospitals is about 80%, the Minister explained. Hinkov noted that sooner or later a decision should be taken to privatize state hospitals that cannot be rehabilitated, as well as to restructure state hospitals, including municipal ones. However, he said, this is a political decision and should be taken at the level of the Health Committee and Parliament.
