A state of disaster has been declared in the Black Sea city of Varna due to extreme weather and a risk to the population. Mayor Blagomir Kotsev issued an order for that shortly after 2am on Tuesday. A woman was killed by a falling tree.
The city was hit by gale-force winds and torrential rain mixed with snow. Power supply is disturbed in all five boroughs of Varna.
Roads are blocked by fallen trees and branches. Roads and the traffic light system have been damaged. Vehicles are stranded, says the mayoral order.
All responsible institutions are working on restoring the damage from the hurricane in Varna. Tasks were distributed by Мayor Blagomir Kotsev during the morning meeting of the emergency crisis taskforce on Sunday, reported the press center of the Varna municipal administration.
The Municipality of Varna calls on citizens to stay at home and not to use their private cars except in urgent cases.
Technical teams with specialized equipment continue to work on the ground to eliminate the consequences of the disaster. Schools and social institutions will also be inspected prior to the first day of the workweek.
