Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel opened the 20th Vienna Economic Forum (VEF) in the Austrian capital on Monday. The event is mottoed "Continuing to Build Economic Bridges during Difficult Times", the Foreign Ministry reported.

The opening was attended by VEF President Victor Jackovich, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Glavbolgarstroy Holding Management Board Chair Kalin Peshov and Marmara Group Foundation President Akkan Suver. Gabriel extended special thanks to VEF Founder and Secretary General Elena Kirtcheva, who is former Bulgarian ambassador to Austria.

The Bulgarian Deputy PM said: "The VEF is a driver of development. It plays a leading role in finding solutions to global and regional challenges." She listed three main challenges. "First, we need a clear vision about the region of Southeastern Europe in key strategic areas such as energy, transport and infrastructure. Second, it is important to invest in innovation, so that it can bring benefits and clear prospects for the new generation. Education and training are essential in this respect. Finally, the VEF has always shown that the Western Balkans belong in the EU. They are part of the European family. It is now important to identify the steps which will bring concrete benefits for the citizens in the process of EU enlargement."

The VEF was set up in 2004 with the strategic goal to promote regional cooperation and dialogue between the countries and territories from the Adriatic to the Black Sea. For two decades, it has served as a bridge between the economy and politics. It is a platform for politicians, economists and diplomats to discuss the region's economy.

Gabriel said: "With its work over the past 20 years, the Forum has shown that the region of Southeastern Europe is a factor for stability, security and development. Europe needs this region, and the region needs Europe." She wished that the VEF continues to contribute to finding sustainable solutions to regional issues, helps attracting investments and supports young talent.

The next edition of the Vienna Economic Forum will be held in Sofia on April 22, 2024, at Gabriel's proposal.
