Combatting corruption is a topmost priority for this government, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Gabriel said here Thursday. She was speaking at a news conference she held jointly with European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi and Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov. "It was very important to get support because the fight against corruption is a top priority for this government. This means constant dialogue with the European Public Prosecutors Office and united action," said Gabriel.

Gabriel said: "The message that will remain from this meeting on various topics we understand that Bulgaria can be an EU member state that sets standards. This gives us more responsibility to continue on the path that this government has been on since day one - fighting corruption, clear reform of the justice system, constitutional changes."

The deputy prime minister also noted that the mission of the European prosecutor is extremely important because, by fighting abuse and fraud, it protects the common interest of the EU and of each member state.
