Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) Co-Floor Leader Delyan Peevski has sent a letter to Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, in which he asks him to present a full report on what has been done for Bulgaria's accession to Schengen since the Government took power on June 6, 2023.

"We want to know everything so far - all the facts and circumstances related to the work of the cabinet chaired by Nikolay Denkov for Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen area, the letter said," Peevski says, as quoted by the MRF press office on Friday.

"Bulgaria's accession to Schengen is an important strategic goal and a leading motive in the formation of the Euro-Atlantic majority in Parliament that elected the Denkov cabinet. In order to fulfil this goal, full synchronization between [state] institutions is needed, so that the full potential of parliamentary diplomacy is used, including the one [potential] not yet sought by the Prime Minister - that of the MRF MEPs", Peevski’s letter reads.

Peevski also wants the PM to outline and report on the steps he plans to take until the meeting of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council on December 4. The MRF Co-Floor Leader also expects Bulgaria to get a date for its Schengen accession.

Peevski stresses that for the sake of good coordination between state institutions and interaction with Parliament, PM Denkov should report his cabinet’s work to the National Assembly on a weekly basis, presenting in-depth analysis, conclusions and forecast results.

Delyan Peevski became MRF Co-Floor Leader on October 16, 2023, sharing this position with Mustafa Karadayi. In addition to co-chairing the MRF Parliamentary Group, Peevski is a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the Committee on Legal Affairs in the 49th National Assembly. The co-chairmanship gives him the opportunity and legitimacy to participate in the chairmen's council meetings at the National Assembly, which determine Parliament's agenda.

On June 2, 2021, the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated Peevski for his extensive role in corruption in Bulgaria. OFAC described him as "an oligarch who previously served as a Bulgarian MP and media mogul and has regularly engaged in corruption, using influence peddling and bribes to protect himself from public scrutiny and exert control over key institutions and sectors in Bulgarian society. In September 2019, Peevski actively worked to negatively influence the Bulgarian political process in the October 27, 2019, municipal elections. Peevski negotiated with politicians to provide them with political support and positive media coverage in return for receiving protection from criminal investigations."
