A delegation of the European Parliament's (EP) Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) will pay a visit to Sofia on October 12-13 to assess the state of democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights in this country, the EP said here on Tuesday.

They will hold meetings with Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov and several ministers, President Rumen Radev, officials from the Justice Ministry and the Interior Ministry, and representatives from civil society and the media. The delegation will be headed by Sophie in 't Veld (Renew Europe Group, the Netherlands) and will include Elena Yoncheva (Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, Bulgaria), Erik Marquardt (Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance, Germany), and Clare Daly (the Left Group, Ireland).

Veld will participate in a press conference at the House of Europe at 3 pm on October 13.

The working visit to Bulgaria is organized within LIBE’s competences and in accordance with the mandate of the LIBE Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG).
