On September 21, 2023, Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox declared September 22, which is Bulgarian Independence Day, as Bulgaria and Utah Friendship Day, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry reported Friday.

The Governor's proclamation establishing Friendship Day between the Republic of Bulgaria and the U.S. State of Utah commemorates the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and the U.S., as well as the outstanding public contributions of the Bulgarians who have chosen the State of Utah as their home.

"I welcome and thank the Governor of the State of Utah, Spencer J. Cox for the initiative. It is an expression of the good cooperation and friendship that we've been building with the US for years, and the values and principles that we share and unite us," Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel said.
