Lawmakers passed on Monday on second reading a bill to amend and supplement the Currency Act, according to which the transfer of cash amounting to EUR 10,000 or more or its equivalent in a different currency across the country's border to or from a third country is subject to declaration to the customs authorities.

The obligation to declare shall be deemed unfulfilled, where the information declared is incorrect or incomplete, and where the funds are not made available to the customs authorities for inspection.

In case of carrying BGN 30,000 or more or their equivalent in a different currency across the border, the customs authorities shall check the traveller for the presence of public liabilities under the Tax and Social Insurance Procedure Code, established by the National Customs Agency. If the inspection establishes the existence of public debts in excess of BGN 5,000, the customs authorities shall not allow the transfer of the cash.
