Vice President Iliana Iotova held a meeting with rapporteurs from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Monitoring Committee, the President’s press centre said here on Monday. The President's Secretary for Legal Affairs Krum Zarkov also attended the talks.

Bulgaria has been in a post-monitoring phase since 2000 and is the only European Union Member State subject to such a process.

Bulgaria's progress on the Council of Europe recommendations on the rule of law in the judiciary was highlighted during the meeting, including the recently adopted mechanism for investigating the prosecutor general and his deputies. The presidential institution’s position on the amendments was presented to the rapporteurs.

The judicial reform prepared by the ruling majority was also discussed. The rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring Committee showed interest in the planned constitutional amendments. Iotova expressed her concerns that the currently proposed changes would disturb the checks and balances.
