The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) "is not giving a single vote" for the changes in the Constitution, BSP leader and floor leader Korneliya Ninova said in Parliament Wednesday. She said that the proposals they were sent include a change of the national holiday, which is "a red line" for the Socialists and making it possible for people with dual citizenship to take high political offices.
Ninova said they also received a proposal from Bulgarian Atlantic Club President and former Foreign Minister Solomon Passy to add a text in the Constitution that would ban referendums putting to question Bulgaria's membership of the EU and NATO. She said was "an absurdity". "To introduce a constitutional ban not to allow people to say their opinion on such important matters is totally unacceptable," she said.
She also said: "At this stage we don't support these changes in the Constitution. Let me remind you that we were approached for talks on a fast-track procedure because they need us to secure the 180 votes that would push through the constitutional changes quickly. We are not giving a single vote for such changes."
