Eight illegal migrants were detained near Pernik on Monday night, Pernik police’s spokesperson Ventsislav Aleksov said Tuesday. He told BTA that the men of Moroccan citizenship rode in a vehicle on their way to Serbia.

Shortly before 01:00 a.m., the police tried to stop the car for a roadside check in the western town of Breznik. The driver disobeyed the order, made a U-turn, and headed back to Pernik. Police followed them and a short time later the car with the migrants crashed into a construction embankment, the police spokesman explained.

No one was hurt in the accident.

The foreign nationals, as well as the Bulgarian driver of the vehicle and a companion, were detained for 24 hours and an investigation has started.
