Olympic gold medalist Karlos Nasar became the European weightlifting champion in the 97kg category with two world records and complete dominance over his competition. Bulgaria's Athlete of the Year improved his best performances in the clean and jerk by one kilogram each to reach the title in Chisinau.

Nasar started the day with a record in the clean and jerk, recorded on the last of his three successful attempts. He lifted 188kg and not only won the clean and jerk at the European Championships, but also surpassed the best achievement of Colombian Lesman Paredes Montano from Tashkent 2021 by one kilogram.

Nasar was 14kg ahead of everyone else, but he did not limit himself to the clean and jerk either. He lifted 210kg and 220kg in succession, then submitted a bid for 229kg. The Bulgarian made a successful attempt and collected a 417 kg lift, which improved by one kilogram the world record of Iranian Sohrab Moradi. He recorded it in November 2018 in Ashgabat.

The only record in the category that Nassar did not take on  in Chisinau was in the clean and jerk movement. It still belongs to the Chinese Tian Tao from 2019 with 231 kg, two more than the Bulgarian.

Georgian Revaz Davitadze finished second in the standings with a full 38 kg behind Nassar. He recorded a 379 (174 and 205) kg lift for three silver medals, while Armenian Davit Hovhannisyan remained with three bronze medals with 376 (173 and 203) kg.
