President Rumen Radev and his wife Dessislava Radeva hosted an annual reception at Sofia's National Museum of History on May 24, the Day of the Bulgarian Alphabet.
Radev said: "There is a day in the year when Bulgaria is the way we all want to see it: united, smiling, full of spirit and confident. There is a holiday which we do not argue about." He said that culture, education and spirituality are deeply ingrained in Bulgarian statehood and identity. According to the President, the Bulgarians were among the leaders of Europe's cultural development long before many European countries even existed.
"We Bulgarians are an integral part of Europe based on our contribution, not on the condescension of others, and based on our own merit, not favours," the President said.
He thanked the academic community, librarians, museum workers, cultural centre employees, writers, artists and teachers for their role in Bulgarian society.
