March 30 has been marked as the Day of the Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv since 1973. It is the second largest in Bulgaria after the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia.
July 1, 1961: By Decree No. 264 of the Presidium of the National Assembly, the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Natural and Mathematical Disciplines opened in Plovdiv for the training of teachers of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.
September 15, 1961: The Institute was inaugurated at the beginning of the academic year in the presence of official guests, leaders of the country and the city, teachers and students. The Rector, Prof Zhivko Lambrev, made a speech entitled "The Higher Pedagogical Institute: A new hub of education and science".
1966: Acting on a proposal by the Academic Council, the National Assembly approved the first National Revival figure, Paisii Hilendarski, as patron of the Institute.
January 12, 1972: The State Council decreed that the Higher Pedagogical Institute become the Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv.
1975: The first Faculty of Public Professions opened (later the Faculty of Staff Training and Retraining).
1989: The higher vocational institutes in the towns of Smolyan, Kardzhali, Pazardzhik and Burgas, as well as the Teacher Training Institute in Stara Zagora, were integrated in the University of Plovdiv, which became the largest university outside the capital.
