On December 2, 1949, the 12,000-kilowatt Sofia thermal power plant goes into operation in the Bulgarian capital. It is the country's first urban TPP.

Its construction started on June 22, 1947. Part of the plant was put into trial operation on March 22, 1949. In the next few months, the rest of the production facilities of the newly built Sofia TPP went into operation. The first industrial steam plant was built, laying the foundations of the Bulgarian thermal power industry.
