The price of eggs remains stable, while the cost of staple foods, fruits and vegetables went up on Bulgaria’s wholesale markets in the week leading up to Easter, according to the latest data from the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets.

The market index for wholesale food prices in Bulgaria rose by 0.79% to 2.418 points over the outgoing week. Last week, the index stood at 2.399 points. The base level of 1 point was set in 2005.

The wholesale price of eggs (size M) was BGN 0.36 per unit.

White brined cheese from cow's milk appreciated by 0.6% to BGN 11.53 per kilogramme, while yellow kashkaval cheese of the Vitosha type depreciated by 0.2% to BGN 18.42/kg.

The price of poultry rose by 1.7% to BGN 6.75/kg. The price of yogurt (with a fat content of 3% and over) went down by 2% to BGN 1.38 for 400 grammes, that of milk (with a fat content of 3%) fell by 0.8% to BGN 2.41 per litre. Butter from cow's milk appreciated by 1.8% to BGN 3.17 per 125 grammes.

The price of rice went up by 1.3% to BGN 3.36/kg. Lentils rose by 0.2% to BGN 4.47/kg. Beans depreciated by 0.7% to BGN 4.42/kg. The price of flour (type 500) increased by 1% to BGN 1.47/kg. Sunflower oil also appreciated, by 2.3% to BGN 3.26/litre, while sugar depreciated by 1.9% to BGN 1.78/kg.

An increase in the price of all fruits and vegetables, excluding new potatoes and green peppers, was observed on the wholesale markets during this week, the data show.

Among vegetables, lettuce saw the largest price rise, increasing by 18.9% to BGN 0.92 per unit, followed by turnips, which went up by 11% to BGN 1.09 per unit.

The price of cabbage rose by 6.3% to BGN 1.65/kg, and that of carrots by 6.9% to BGN 1.27/kg. Potatoes appreciated by 5% to BGN 1.38/kg, while new potatoes depreciated by 6.4% to BGN 3.95/kg.

Tomatoes rose by 1.1% to BGN 3/kg, cucumbers by 4.9% to BGN 2.93/kg, onions by 7.2% to BGN 1.25/kg. The price of green pepper dropped by 1.3% to BGN 5.68/kg.

The price of oranges increased by 4.9% to BGN 2.26/kg, that of lemons rose by 3.3% to BGN 2.76/kg. Apples appreciated by 0.4% to BGN 1.89/kg. Bananas rose by 0.6% to BGN 2.84/kg.
