At the end of March the money in circulation in Bulgaria decreased by 3.2% or BGN 979.6 million to BGN 30.098 billion, compared with the last quarter of 2024, according to a quarterly review about the emission and cash operations of the Bulgarian National Bank. The quarterly decline in the value of money in circulation at the beginning of each year is a traditional phenomenon.

The total value of banknotes in circulation amounted to BGN 29.47 billion at the end of March this year. The value of change coins in circulation reached BGN 626.4 million and the value of commemorative coins was at BGN 1.8 million.

At the end of March 2025, 583.7 million banknotes were in circulation, down by 27.3 million, or 4.5%, compared with the end of 2024. Over the same period, their total value decreased by 3.2%. Over the one-year period, the number of banknotes in circulation increased by 1.3 million (0.2%) and their value by BGN 1.173 billion (4.2%).

The average value of banknotes in circulation at the end of the first quarter of 2025 was BGN 50.41, an increase of BGN 0.65 compared with the end of 2024. Over a one-year period, its value increased by BGN 1.90, or by 3.9%, due to the continued increase in the number of BGN 100 banknotes in monetary circulation and a significant decrease in the number of BGN 10, 20 and 50 banknotes, the bank said.
