Romania's independent presidential candidate and current mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, has announced that his social media accounts are at maximum risk and he will probably not use them for campaigning until the end of the election campaign.
"There is unusual activity. My profiles have been attacked by hundreds of thousands of fake accounts. On all three platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok) we have 10,000 comments that are in very poor Romanian and are made by accounts from Vietnam, Pakistan, Brazil, India, Indonesia," Dan explained at a press conference that was broadcast live on the internet.
He has already lodged complaints with state authorities and European institutions, as well as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
Nicusor Dan commented that in theory there are specialists from state institutions who can prevent exactly this type of situation, but they do nothing, and this is the reason why the presidential elections were cancelled last November.
"I want the state bodies to do their duty. Especially in the context in which we annulled the elections for this very reason," the mayor of Bucharest stressed.
Asked who might be behind these attacks, he said he had no suspicions.
